BMI Calculator

The Body Mass Index (BMI) Calculator helps you estimate your BMI value and understand your weight category, while also considering age. You can use the Metric Units tab for the International System of Units, or the Other Units tab to switch between US and metric units. In addition to BMI, the calculator also provides the Ponderal Index, both of which are explained below.

What is BMI?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measure that relates a person’s height and weight to estimate overall body mass. It’s commonly used as a quick way to check whether someone has a healthy weight for their height.

The BMI number is then compared against standard ranges to categorize a person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. These ranges can differ slightly by age and region, and in some cases are further divided (e.g., severely underweight, very severely obese).

Although BMI isn’t a perfect measure—since it doesn’t directly assess body fat—it’s a widely used indicator to flag possible health concerns. Being significantly underweight or overweight can impact health, so BMI can help determine whether further checks or lifestyle changes may be needed.
